In the summer of 1993 I realized the project CITTA’ DEL DUCE with a truck converted into a pinhole camera in the Italian district town of Forli – nearby Predappio, the birthplace of Mussolini. The theme of this work is the architecture of the Mussolini era.
Inside this mobile camera obscura light falls through a minute hole onto large-format photo material, which is then immediately developed and fixed inside the truck. The light reflected from the architecture leaves its traces directly on the photo paper. Negative images show us how light becomes shadow and shadows shine in gleaming white. The long exposure times up to many hours eliminate all human presence. Strolling passersby and the daily traffic are not depicted. What remains are theatrical stagesets void of humans.

Mit einem zur Lochkamera umgebauten Lastkraftwagen realisierte ich im Sommer 1993 in der italienischen Kreisstadt Forli – in der Nähe Predappios, der Geburtsstadt Mussolinis – das Projekt “CITTA’ DEL DUCE”. Thema dieser Arbeit war die Architektur der Mussolini-Ära.
Im Inneren der mobilen Camera obscura fällt das durch ein nur winziges Loch gebündelte Licht auf großformatiges Fotomaterial, welches anschließend sofort im LKW entwickelt und fixiert wird. Das von den Architekturen zurückgeworfene Licht hinterlässt seine direkten Spuren auf dem Fotopapier. Negative Bilder zeigen uns wie Lichter zu Schatten werden und Schatten in gleißendem Weiß erstrahlen. Die langen Belichtungszeiten von bis zu mehreren Stunden eliminieren jede menschliche Präsenz. Flanierende Passanten und der alltägliche Autoverkehr werden nicht abgebildet. Was bleibt, sind menschenleere theatrale Kulissen.
